Tomatoes and courgettes are cropping heavily, and need regular feeding with a home-made comfrey liquid feed. Blackcurrants produce a really heavy crop this month, which we use to make jam.

The sowing of autumn and winter crops begins, including Swiss chard, spring cabbage, winter cabbage and kale. We continue topping the pastures as necessary. There is less nutrition in the grass now than in mid-summer, and we need to ensure that the lambs are still growing well. We weigh them and top them up with supplementary feed if necessary. The wether (castrated) lambs are approacing their ideal finishing weights.

Sunshine our Shire horse helps us with hoeing to control the weeds in the outdoor vegetable areas.
