February sees lengthening days, and tasks needing to be carried out as the weather allows are spring ploughing and other cultivations on the vegetable areas. Pastures will also be chain harrowed and rolled as conditions allow.

Towards the end of the month the livery horses will be moved onto summer pasture.

The main job in February is the lambing of our flock of Wensleydale sheep. We choose to lamb our sheep in a polytunnel with a daytime exercise paddock, this enables a close eye to be kept on the sheep in case assistance is required. Lambs at birth have their navels dipped in iodine to help prevent bacterial infections. We ensure that lambs receive a good drink of colostrum (first milk from their mothers which contains many antibodies to provide immunity and resistance to various diseases). Ewes and lambs are turned out to pasture when we are satisfied that the lambs are thriving.

Wensleydale lamb
This is Floyd, the first lamb to be born at Rising Sun in 2008.

His mum Dusty is a shearling, which means she is two years old. Dusty is a first-time mother and both she and Floyd are doing really well.
