A very busy time in the horticulture area, lots of work is needed to keep on top of the weeds, and a watchful eye is kept out for ragwort, which is a poisonous plant to all livestock. Any ragwort plants are dug out by hand.

The sheep are brought in for shearing towards the end of the month. Each Wensleydale fleece weighs around 5kgs and the sheep are very glad to be cooler and lighter. The sheep receive a general service at this time, from trimming feet, checking teeth and udders, and looking out for fly strike. Last year's gimmer lambs (young females) are weighed to ensure they're well on-course to being suitable for tupping (mating) this autumn.

We watch out for heat stroke in pigs in hot sunny weather, and provide them with cool muddy wallows which they enjoy very much.
