Now we begin to prune the fruit trees and bushes to maintain their shape and to thin out any dead or weak branches. Towards the end of the month the tup (ram) is removed from the ewes' field - this ensures we have a controlled lambing period in February next year. Pigs and poultry are moved from their summer areas onto fresh pasture to ensure they have access to grass and this also helps control parasitic worms and disease.

The weather becomes cooler and wetter, which restricts field operations as heavy machinery might get stuck or damage wet clay soils. The strawberries are planted out on their black plastic beds to help them get established before winter sets in.

We begin general maintenance jobs on the farm, like fencing and machinery maintenance. This is a good time to plant trees and shrubs, so we check and fill in any gaps in the hedges with native species such as hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple and dogrose.
